Lookalike Audience

« Back to Glossary Index

Lookalike Audience is an advertising targeting feature used primarily on platforms such as Facebook Ads, Google Ads, and other online advertising services. This feature enables advertisers to find potential new customers who resemble their existing customers or a specific audience they have already defined.

How Lookalike Audiences work

  1. Define a source audience: The advertiser begins by selecting a source audience, which may be made up of its best customers, visitors to its website, or people who have interacted with its page or ads. This audience can be based on a list of contacts (emails, phone numbers, etc.) or on website visitors via tracking pixels.
  2. Similar audience creation: Based on this source audience, the advertising platform uses algorithms to analyze the common characteristics of the people in this audience, such as behaviors, interests, demographics, and so on.
  3. Similar audience targeting: Next, it generates a new audience made up of people who are not yet part of the source audience, but who share similar characteristics. These people are then more likely to be interested in the products or services on offer.

Advantages of Lookalike Audiences

  • Extended reach: This enables advertisers to reach market segments they might not otherwise have reached, while retaining a certain degree of relevance.
  • Improved performance: By targeting users who are similar to those already interested in the product or service, the chances of conversion can be higher.
  • Optimized advertising costs: By targeting the right users more precisely, advertisers can reduce unnecessary expenditure and maximize return on investment (ROI).

Examples of using Lookalike Audiences

  • E-commerce: An online store can use a similar audience to target people who are similar to its most loyal customers.
  • Product launch: When launching a new product, a company can use a similar audience to reach people who share characteristics with those who have shown interest in similar products previously.

In short, Lookalike Audience is a powerful tool for advertisers looking to expand their audience while maintaining a high level of relevance and efficiency in their advertising campaigns.
