SERP

« Back to Glossary Index

The term SERP (Search Engine Results Page) refers to the results page of a search engine, such as Google, Bing or Yahoo, which is displayed after a user has entered a query in the search bar. This page lists relevant results in response to the user’s query, presenting both organic (non-paid) and sponsored (paid) results.

Typical SERP components :

  1. Organic results:
    • These are links to web pages that the search engine has deemed relevant to the user’s query. These results are ranked according to relevance, quality and the search engine’s algorithm. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) aims to improve the ranking of these organic results.
  2. Paid ads (SEA):
    • Paid ads, often marked as “Ad” or “Sponsored”, usually appear at the top, bottom or sometimes side of organic results. These ads are the result of advertising campaigns run via platforms like Google Ads, where advertisers bid on keywords to obtain these placements.
  3. Featured Snippets:
    • These are results highlighted in a box at the top of the SERP, offering a direct response to the user’s query. Featured snippets can include definitions, lists, tables, or paragraphs extracted from a web page. They aim to provide a quick answer without the user having to click on a link.
  4. Knowledge Graph:
    • It’s an information box that usually appears on the right-hand side of the SERP, providing structured data on a specific topic. For example, if you’re looking for a celebrity, the Knowledge Graph can display biographical information, images and relevant links.
  5. People Also Ask (PAA):
    • A section showing frequently asked questions related to the user’s query. Each question can be clicked to reveal a brief answer and a link to the source of the information.
  6. Images and videos:
    • Sometimes, the SERP includes a section of images or videos relevant to the query. These multimedia results are extracted from various online sources and can be placed at the top or in the middle of the search results.
  7. Local Pack:
    • For local queries, a group of three local businesses is displayed with their addresses, phone numbers, opening hours and a map. This is often the case for searches like “restaurant near me” or “plumber at [ville]”.
  8. Shopping results:
    • A section dedicated to products on sale, displaying product images, prices, and links to corresponding e-commerce sites. This often appears for searches related to specific products.
  9. Rich Snippets:
    • These are search results enriched with additional information, such as reviews, ratings, prices, or event information. Rich snippets stand out for their format and provide more context for the user.

The importance of SERPs for digital marketing :

  1. Visibility and Traffic:
    • Being well-positioned on the SERP is crucial to attracting traffic to a website. The results that appear on the first page, especially in the first links, capture the majority of clicks.
  2. SEO and SERPs:
    • SEO aims to optimize web pages so that they appear as high as possible in the SERP’s organic results. This involves optimizing content, keywords, tags and many other factors.
  3. Impact of Featured Snippets:
    • Featured snippets, although located at the top of the page, can reduce the number of clicks on organic results by providing a direct response on the SERP itself. However, appearing in a featured snippet can also increase a site’s credibility and authority.
  4. Targeted advertising (SEA):
    • SEA campaigns allow companies to pay to be visible on the SERP, even if their site doesn’t appear at the top of the organic results. This offers immediate visibility and is particularly useful for new businesses or those entering a competitive market.
  5. Measuring competition:
    • SERPs offer a direct overview of the competition for a given keyword. Companies can analyze the pages that appear at the top of the results to understand what’s working well and adjust their strategy accordingly.

En résumé :

The SERP is where much of the online competition is played out, as it determines which sites receive user traffic. Understanding and optimizing your presence on the SERP, whether via SEO, SEA, or other methods, is essential for any company seeking to succeed in digital marketing.
